Bone Banking and Allograft

Abstract
Bone allografts are being used more frequently in the management of a wide spectrum of orthopedic condition. Bone banks exist for the purpose of supplying the surgeon with safe and effective allografts.
The use of allograft for any substitute for autogenous tissue requires consideration of its biologic and biomechanical potential as a graft material and of the possibility of transfer of disease from donor to recipient.
The guidelines of reliable donor screening, procurement, preservation, safety, and availability of banked bone are reviewed, before embarking an bone banking program, to prvide satisfactory allogenic bone for clinical use.
